How Dachshunds Sleep

Dachshunds love to burrow, and they hate to have light in their eyes while they are sleeping (I feel the same way). The other night, as I was working on a project, I looked over at the couch and had to get my camera. Poki's rear was all I could see! I snapped the picture (above).

Then, the next time I looked, her rear was gone and her stomach (and one paw) was all I could see (middle). Don't ask me how they breathe under there!!
The top picture shows the entire Poki. She doesn't spend ALL her time out of sight!

SISTERS: Sharing a Bed

There are three dogs beds, count them: THREE! near the computer, but both Poki and Grace wanted THIS dogbed! Actually, they can both fit in there if they snuggle up close.

Lest you think I am a talented photographer, I will disclose that I take fifty pictures to get one like this.

Poki Rests

Nothing like dogs to teach us humans how to relax!

More dogs

If you know anything about dachshunds, you will know that they love to burrow in blankets. Ours like afghans, because they can still see out. Ours do this every evening, year in and year out, but in the winter, on cold days, they burrow in the day, too. Grace, the red one, is less a burrower than Wiener, the black one, or Poki, the dapple. They are also very fond of our natural gas fireplace and will leave a lap when they see the fire come on.
I am working on a doll for an auction (see Cici's auction on The Fisch Tank), so will have a pic of that soon.
I'm also making six cowboy boot quilt blocks that I'm mailing to TX today. Will show pics of those later, too. AND I got 12 JoAnn's 1999 quilt blocks (BOMs) for 25 cents each at a rummage sale last week, on the SECOND day, no less. I've basted about four of them together while watching The Olympics. Pics to come.

Another picture of Poki. She's been with us a week now, and we are experiencing what it's like to have a younger dog, again. She is into a lot of things: my yarn, my teddy bears who sit in a child's wicker rocker, etc. I bought her a little soft elephant at a rummage sale today, and am trying to convince her that the teddy bears are MINE and the elephant is HERS.
Despite her recent broken legs, she can jump into our bathtub all by herself.

Poki in "the nitch."

My chair is a recliner made for someone my husband's size (6'4"), so there is room for me and a dog on the side. Today it's Poki's turn to inhabit what we call "the nitch." She likes it there, as this picture shows.

Poki has shown me that she is also able to jump into the bathtub all by herself! I was surprised, as our other dogs HATE the bathtub and would never do that! Poki could not, however, jump out by herself.

A Chilly January Day in SW WA State

These are our three dogs, on this cold January day. The two pics above are Wiener in the front window. LaMont is gone, so Wiener is on guard, watching for his return. I couldn't resist photographing Grace's cute little Doxie tush; I love the way her short little back legs stick out straight behind her sometimes.
The picture to the left is Daphne, our 14 year old mix; she is lying not far from the gas fireplace--a good place for an old dog on a cold afternoon.
They are out where it's warm, and I'm in here where it's cold. My knitting is also out there where it's warm and I'm going to join the heat-seekers and knit!!

I guess I was wrong! and My Dogs

Toys are still being dropped! Perhaps until New Year's Eve? Here are the latest places: Seattle, WA, USA; Winslow, Maine USA; Stockton, Ca, USA; Columbia, South Carolina, USA; Boulder, Colorado, USA; Silver Spring, Maryland, USA
Our dog Grace is in the hospital today for teeth cleaning, hernia repair, microchip, and toenail trimming. As long as she's "out," might as well get everything possible done!! I hate leaving my babies at the vet, but sometimes it has to be done.(sigh)
In a few weeks, our dachshund population will grow to three; we are adopting another female mini who was hit by a car and had her two hind legs broken. She is still recuperating in foster care and will have another surgery to remove the external metal brace from one leg, and to be spayed. I will ask them to put a microchip in at the same time, too. Her name is Poki, short for Pokahantas, and both Wiener and Grace liked her when we took them for a visit last week. I'd like to visit her again this week, but with Grace having surgery today, and DH having surgery tomorrow (and having to return for Xrays on Wednesday), the only day we could visit would be Thursday, New Year's Eve, and I think Poki is visiting foster mom's relatives with her that day. So it looks as if we'll have to wait until next week.
